About
Praloy Patra is a theatre director, actor, singer, and theatre-maker based in Hyderabad, India. Over the past eight years, he has worked across street theatre, proscenium theatre, devised performance, musical theatre, and intimate performance practices in Bengali, Hindi, English, and multilingual contexts. His work is rooted in an engagement with political memory, social justice, collective histories, and the relationship between theatre and public life. Praloy began his theatre journey with Goonj – The Revolution Begins in Bhubaneswar, where he worked extensively in street theatre before co-founding Asansol Cultural Front in West Bengal. Through productions such as Made in India, Jihaad, Che'r Cycle, Marx in Soho, and Park, he explored themes of identity, power, labour, resistance, and historical memory. He is currently the co-founder of SHOi Theatre, Hyderabad, where he has directed productions including Hamlet Ya Nahi, Rawther Roshi, Buujgavna, Octopus Limited ESTD 2024. His artistic practice draws from ensemble creation, adaptation, documentary material, music, and interdisciplinary approaches to performance. Praloy has trained with and worked alongside theatre practitioners including Sunil Shanbag, Anamika Haksar, Feroze MNA, Prajith K. Prasad, Ramith Ramesh, and Arka Mukhopadhyay, and continues to explore theatre as a space for critical inquiry and collective imagination.
